Meeting Notes:

On the 23rd of January, 2024, Springfield community center was packed with local residents despite a “winter storm warning”. They gathered to learn more about the effectiveness of wind energy, how it compares to other energy sources, and its impact on health, land, wildlife, economy, and the overall well-being of those living in the surrounding area.

Nicole Dillingham, an attorney, opened a meeting to introduce the presenters, and gave a brief update on the Town of Stark wind turbine project.

Keith Shue, an electrical engineer, spoke first about energy sources and their efficiency, specifically the current mix available in New York and the state’s plans for the coming decades. He presented data on the reliability of wind and solar energy and the amount needed to meet energy demand.

Jonathan Knauth P.E., a Deputy Supervisor and Councilman in the Town of Litchfield, discussed how health and wildlife are impacted by wind turbines. He cited minimum distances that turbines should be located from other properties to avoid harmful effects.

Steve Helmin, an engineer and community advocate in the Town of Glen, shared the experience of his group, Stop Energy Sprawl, in opposing similar projects. He offered a comprehensive list of actions for the COACH group.

The evening ended with a Q&A session. On hand to answer questions were Keith Shue, Eric Dawson, Jonathan Knauth, Steve Helmin, Steve Collins (retired engineering professor) and Nicole Dillingham.

A petition was available for those in attendance to sign. In addition, NO WIND TURBINES post cards were distributed and filled out. These will be mailed to the Governor of NY.

A WKTV news crew came to observe the event for the 11 pm news.
